Emma Lumsden

Outreach Committee

Emma Lumsden is a freelance horn player and educator in the greater Los Angeles area. She has performed in a variety of ensembles across California, including large groups such as the Fresno Philharmonic, Orchestra Santa Monica, and the American Youth Symphony, where she served as Assistant Principal Horn, all the way to smaller ensembles such as the Culver City Chamber Orchestra and the Southern California Brass Consortium. Outside of performing, she is passionate about classical music accessibility and finding ways to bring in new audiences to the classical music scene. To promote accessibility in classical music, she enjoys incorporating well-known music into her performances and also believes in spreading a love of classical music through diverse and equitable music education.

Ms. Lumsden earned her Bachelor’s Degree at Indiana University Bloomington, where she studied with Jeff Nelsen, but also frequently took lessons with Dale Clevenger and Richard Seraphinoff. After completing her Bachelor’s she moved back to California, her home state, where she studied at UCLA with Amy Sanchez. She also attributes much of her success to her first horn teacher, Warren Gref, with whom she studied from 6th grade through graduate school.

Emma currently works as an elementary school library aide and as a freelance musician in Los Angeles. She spends most of her free time reading (or watching TikToks), drinking coffee, or going on walks… and sometimes does all 3 at the same time… Emma is excited to work with LAB-A this year helping to bring brass music to even more of Los Angeles.
